For patients undergoing radiotherapy, “fatigue” is a widespread yet difficult-to-resolve problem. According to oncology statistics, most patients experience significant physical decline and sleep disturbances during radiotherapy, which can even affect mood and social life. At the same time, researchers measured free radical metabolites and antioxidant capacity in the patients’ blood to objectively determine whether hydrogen truly reduces oxidative damage.

After a six-week observation period, the results were encouraging.

Compared with the control group, patients drinking hydrogen-rich water showed a marked decrease in reactive oxygen species metabolites in their blood, while their antioxidant capacity was preserved. More importantly, during radiotherapy, the quality-of-life scores of the hydrogen-water group were significantly higher than those of the control group.

This means hydrogen-rich water not only helps patients reduce fatigue and discomfort caused by radiotherapy but also brings noticeable overall improvement in daily life: better sleep, more stable mood, and faster physical recovery.

Notably, the study also confirmed that hydrogen-rich water does not compromise the tumor-control efficacy of radiotherapy itself. In other words, while hydrogen’s antioxidant action alleviates side effects, it does not weaken radiation’s ability to kill cancer cells — a finding of great clinical importance for both physicians and patients.

Safety and Application Potential of Hydrogen-Rich Water

Scientific Controversy Worth Noting

Of course, scientific research always leaves room for discussion. Experts reviewing this study have raised a valid question: since radiotherapy kills tumor cells largely through free radicals, if hydrogen neutralizes free radicals, could it also weaken radiotherapy’s destructive effect on the tumor?

The current explanation is that **radiotherapy acts primarily in the local high-dose irradiated area, whereas the antioxidant effect of hydrogen-rich water is systemic and at relatively low concentration, insufficient to protect tumor cells in the intensely irradiated zone.

In real-world observations, hydrogen-rich water did not compromise tumor shrinkage or treatment response; instead, it successfully alleviated systemic side effects. This remains a topic deserving further research, but the present results already carry important clinical implications.
